i’ve been visiting a friend at her house for the past month very regularly. the road she lives on is quite small, with all the houses quite close together. I have been also using this road as a shortcut very often every week at different times as i only found out it was a short cut since i started visiting my friend. so i walk down the road back and forth quite a lot. i also walk quite slowly down the road as i’m just recovering from a problem with my leg.
today i noticed that as i was walking down the road, a lady in a house quite near to my friend’s house who i visit, was staring at me from her window and looking to see where i was going as i was walking past. she kept watching me. obviously she has seen me walking down the road a lot.
i am a 20 year old girl, i am, if i may say, quite refined, not thuggish looking or anything.
do you think she is going to say something to her neighbours about me?

I don’t see your problem! Are you trying to cover up the fact that you’re stalking someone or something, and the neighbour’s spotted you?If I’m on the wrong track then so are you.You must try to open your life a little.Get a job, join a club or something.

Daisy, my only problem with this question is that it is in the Anthropology Forum…..

Could you give me a clue as to how this links to that subject..?

As for your ‘staring neighbour,’ simply start walking and carrying a walking stick. That tends to reassure people that you are a serious member of society and not a threat. (See..! I managed to find a link to anthropology..! As in ‘Social Mores in urban society.’

I don’t understand the problem?

Are you not supposed to use this particular ‘short cut’ road?

I’m actually glad when my neighbors keep a keen eye on people in my neighborhood.

But then again, sometimes people are just to nosey for their own good.

I doubt it and if she does just explain your visiting your friend and you have to walk slowly. Be polite im sure shell understand. Just explin that you have no bad intentions and youll try not to bother her

She probably won’t say anything to the neighbors, but she is probably watching where you are going and what you are doing, making sure you aren’t doing anything suspicious.

yes

That is holding them back when it comes to groundbreaking creativity, innovation and technological revolutionary inventiveness? A change of DNA/Genetics or their Culture/Government that is holding them back? Now I do believe the West has been more dominant for the past 200 years when it came to innovation and the like.Unlike their creative Japan/S-Korea counterparts, they seem somewhat "Asleep" when it comes to innovation. But it is interesting how ancient China was technologically more advanced and innovative than all of Europe and the Middle East for a very long time until the 1600′s.Considering how what started the "Age of European Exploration" and Christopher Columbus (accidently landing in America) was the desire to trade with the Far East.Like Gunpowder, Compass, Paper, etc.Even Marco Polo….

So what do you think?

Obviously since you showed their past contributions, it couldn’t be genetic. It is certainly cultural. We may be seeing the wakening of the sleeping dragon. They have been held back by tyrants and communism but if allowed to, I am confident that there are plenty of extremely intelligent people there just waiting to let their talents loose.

Chinese (along with Europeans and ancient Arabs) are the sole contributors to humanities advancements throughout the ages. Currently though, it’s Communism that is keeping the Chinese people back, even then, China isn’t so much a Communist dictatorship rather a Technocratic dictatorship. The whole basis of Communism is the false assumption that all humans are equal, and thus, we must all live equal, even if it means stopping any scientific breakthroughs and regressing society. That is what modern liberals and Cultural Marxists want, and is why they want Europe and China to be flooded with hordes of lesser humans.

China has contributed much to world culture, Communism is making mainland China lag behind. It has nothing to do with genetics.

What exactly have YOU done recently that equals ANYTHING the Chinese are doing in this Day and Age..? And I mean YOU personally, not some nebulous ‘They.’ What absolute nonsense..! "Chinese people’s DNA/genes or their culture/government that is holding them back."

Yeah, riiiight…!

What the West needs to do is look to their laurels. The G.N.P. of China is humongous and frightening. Their population is 1.3 Billion and rising. Their eyes are all on Territorial Imperative and they will soon be marching. They murder a million girl babies EVERY YEAR, so guess where their young men are going to find partners and mates..? That’s right, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and all points West.

Holding them back.. You wish…!!!!

In the past China was leading in technology about 1000 years ago, but I think due to their culture, they started lagging behind, but I think in the next 50 year they will definitely lead again.

It CAN’T be genetic.

One big problem for China now is its population, 1.3 Billion people, and a large portion is still extremely poor, so I think for now their government is still focusing on lifting those people out of poverty while trying to maintain a steady growth rate. It is reflected in their 5 year plan economic developement initiatives.

Second, the US spends 405 Billion on Research and developement, whereas China only spends 153 Billions, but if you look at their expenditures in other sectors, my guess is they are quite large. It only seems logical that they would focus on important thigs for now, how do you expect to make groundbreaking inventions if your population is not healthy, does not have good housing, safe and adequate transportation system. Maybe in a few years, they would shift their focus to inventions and such.

There is no evidence against evolution.

Evidence for evolution:
Look up "ring species".
DNA tests. Like testing if someone is parent of someone else, or testing if some DNA is from the same person. By comparing the DNA of two people you can see if they are related. The samemethod works also to see how related two people from different continents are. And it works to see how related a person is to any other organism.
Fossils.

I mean come on. Evolution is hardly science. It just says "stuff changes from generation to generation". It also says survivors survive and efficient reproducers reproduce efficiently.

Darwin looked at the evidence of similar animals living in similar locations with similar ancestors as evidenced by the fossils. He noticed, for example, that the tortoises of the different islands varied in ways that seemed to follow their particular needs.Similarly, he found different birds that he first thought were different types but then figured out that they all seemed to be types of finches. He noticed that the different finches had different beaks for different purposes depending on what the bird did for a living. If it ate seeds, it had a short powerful beak.If it ate nectar, its beak became elongated. These relationships made him conclude that animals had a common ancestor and evovled changes over time based on the needs of particular niches.

We have subsequently confirmed most of Darwin’s assumptions by DNA and additional fossil evidence.

What is the alternative?

You have some good answers for evolution. We’d add that the issue has been to the courts and evolution has alwaysbeen the winner.
http://ncse.com/taking-action/ten-major-??

In fact, even the creationist web sites lists "Arguments we think creationists should NOT use"
http://creation.com/arguments-we-think-c??

The basic problem is that the scientific method requires one to do research then present evidence for their position, then defend it. Normally this is through papers in peer reviewed publications. In the evolution/creation issue, you’ll find that the creationist arguments run more to "evolution is wrong; I don’t believe we came from monkeys; and evolution is only a theory." Plus creationists reply on internet websites rather then peer reviewed publications.

Here’s one example that appears on the board:

"??Nebraska man – a pigs tooth?? Sounds bad. Scientists can’t tell if it’s human or a pig. However there’s always the ‘rest of the story:"

??In 1922, solely on the basis of a worn fossil tooth from Nebraska, paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn described Hesperopithecus haroldcookii as the first anthropoid ape from North America. Five years later, Osborn’s colleague William King Gregory concluded that the tooth most likely came from an extinct peccary.??
http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/homs/wol??

So and ??ape?? but not a man. The issue was over in 1927 some 80 plus years ago.

Where did the ??man?? come from? The Illustrated London News had one of their artists paint what a British anatomist ??thought?? it should look like. ??Osborn and his colleagues at the American Museum were not impressed with Forestier’s handiwork and felt that "such a drawing or ‘reconstruction’ would doubtless be only a figment of the imagination of no scientific value, and undoubtedly inaccurate." (Anon., 1922) So not unlike a tabloid hyping what they ‘think" people would want to hear.

Finally ??Forestier’s reconstruction of Nebraska Man was not reproduced in any other contemporary publication and has only recently been "rediscovered" and reprinted by critics of evolution (e.g., Hitching, 1982; Bowden, 1981; see also Fix, 1984).??

First the original identification was never a ‘man." Then the original claim was dropped. Finally a newspaper artist draws something. based on incorrect assumptions.

However, such claims keep getting repeated

For:
A wide range of fossil evidence for many species throughout the world.
Genetic evidence for humans and other organisms
Short-term evolution observed directly
Common sense

Against:
Nothing

Evidence for evolution is SCIENCE and evidence against evolution is RELIGION.

Well, some day find or look at a fossil, then draw your own conclusion.

is there any indication of europeans accidentaly following the ice sheet and or use rude boats to reach north america about 50,000-30,000 years ago ?

There is a show called First Canadians that shows that this indeed did happen. There are points in Eastern NAm that resemble Soulutrean developing into Clovis.. I have seen it several times and it is fictionalized but let me tell yah the archaeology proves it. I thought so in 1985 but my Prof only gave me an A-.

There is no evidence of this.Because of the widespread locaton of haplogroup X around the world, and the fact that haplogroup X is found in Native Americans in the northeast part of North America, some people have been pushing the Solutrean hypothesis. In this hypothesis, ice age peopletravelled to North America from Europe via boat around the southern edge of the Arctic ice pack. This hypothesis lacks the support of most scientists.

These are the current theories: the Bering Land Bridge Theory, Pacific Coastal Route Theory, Pacific Crossing Theory, andthe Atlantic Crossing Theory,

Here are the theories and discussion:

Bering Land Bridge

During the great ice age, the great ice sheets locked up much of the world’s water. The sea level dropped as much as 300 feet. This greatly changed the shape of the coastlines. What was, and is now, the Bering Strait became dry land. Asia and the Americas were connected. The exposed sea bottom has been named "Beringia.

The major problem with the theory is that there are archeological sites found all over North America with about the same carbon-14 date. (10,500- 12,500 BCE). The southern tip of South America has sites dated to just 1,000 years later. That’s quite a movement of people. Supporters must find an explanation to how the ice could retreat and people could colonize the Americas so quickly.

To do so they point to an ice free corridor that opened between the Hudson Bay and Rocky Mountain ice sheets. Once opened and "greened up" with plants and animals, this created a pathway for people to enter the new lands.

Excavations along the supposed route do not fully support the theory. There should be datable sites and a fairly haven travel pattern.

Another issue is the rate that the Americas were occupied. Most explanations go "If a group of hunters moved only 25 miles south in each generation…" The however is that mountain ranges, climatic changes and distribution of plant and animals are not uniformed. Most nomadic groups tend to stay in familiar lands and exploit the resources that they have learned about. It’s only later, when a group splits or famine threatens that they move.

Pacific Coastal Route Theory

This is similar to the Bering Land Bridge theory. People came across through Beringia and settled the Americas. However, they used boats and followed the Pacific coastline.

Recent investigations have shown that there were small refuges along the western coastline. Sea faring peoples could have migrated south along the coast. However, finding their campsites now requires exploration in deep water. A few years ago, there was a dredging operation. Sites were selected based on the expected coastline of 10,000 plus years ago and on the known required for a camping spot. This yielded a manmade stone tool.

The Clovis toolkit uses a toggle shaft system. The projectile point is hafted to a short foreshaft. This then fits into a socket of a longer shaft. Such a system is often used in hunting sea mammals.

Archeological finds in Indonesia and Australia, show that Homo Erects did cross some significant ocean passages. The first Australians had to cross 60 miles of ocean. This suggests that humans could have had ocean sailing abilities.

The problem with the theory is a lack or evidence. The "Clovis First" group claims that all the oldest dated sites are Clovis and that the Bering Land Bridge theory explains them. Sites, such as Cactus Hill in Virginia do have a dateable preClovis deposits. However, actual evidence is scanty and under debate.

Pacific Crossing Theory,

This theory is based on the observation that the oldest human sites appear to be in South America. That it was South America that seemed to be settled first. Monte Verde, a site in the far south of Chile is dated to 16,500 BCE. These a propertied site in Brazil with a claim of 30,000 BCE.

Kennewick Man and the oldest known American skeletons appear to display traits more that of Pacific Islanders, Australians and the original people of Japan.

The theory has ocean traveling people making landfall in South America after crossing the South Pacific. That’s a cold and barren route, with few landmasses.

Atlantic Crossing Theory

This theory is based on two main points. Siberia has no corresponding Clovis Point Culture and there’s a "X factor" in the Native American Blood groupings.

If Clovis had started in the Americas, traces of similar stone technology should also appear in Asia. It doesn’t. About the closest similar stonework comes from Spain.

The "X Factor" in Native American blood is present in a very small percentage of the population. It is found in Europeans, not Asians.

The theory has hunters following the edge of the polar ice pack. They lived off marine animals and sealife. Once in North America they spread out.

Most likely, there were a number of waves of immigrants to the Americas. The arguments for the number and route seem to change daily.

The current contender for the "most probable" seems to have the Pacific coastal route on the rise. Basically it is supported my most of the current facts and does explain the very early dating that is currently being discovered. However, it would be better to wait 20 years to see what else happens.

Yes there is.The Solutrean apparently reached here as evidenced by the very good stone tools clovis. This article is skeptical of the theory but I am less skeptical. He doesn’t believe that humans were smart enough to have figured out how to follow the ice.It is the trap many anthropologists fall into by assuming that non-"civilized" people aren’t capable. They were very capable.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clovis_cult??
There are native Americans who patrol this site seeking to remove any indication that they weren’t the first.I frankly don’t think it matters but I am interested in science, and not their religious belief that they originated in US.In fact, they almost certainly came from Asia with the possible exception of some surviving clovis peoples.

Some argue that this is the way it happened, but most accept the hypothesis that Siberian populations arrived in the Americas via Beringia.
